United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Washington, D.C.

Project Description:
SAFEnet 5.6.3 Complete System Upgrade to SAFEnet 6.2.16 using IDC Hardware

For over 20 years, Monitor Dynamics has provided unified security technology equipment to the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing at their Washington, D.C. facility. Along with manufacturing The Bureau’s command, control and communication software and intelligent access control hardware (SAFEnet using SAFEnet IDC Hardware), MonDyn provides system training and technical support services for the facility.

MonDyn was recently chosen to upgrade the entire software and computer head-end for the Bureau of engraving and Printing. Additionally 146 SAFEnet IDC panels were updated with new SAFEnet IDC conversion boards to provide Ethernet communications to the host. This process eliminated legacy components that used slower and outdated serial communication protocols and utilized a more robust and cost effective IP protocol for communications. onDyn provided certified technicians and engineers through-out the systems upgrade process. The responsibilities of these individuals were to provide Database conversion of the existing legacy system data as well as the conversion of each integrated field panel.

Testing for each area was conducted and verified after conversion of the panel. Testing was documented and test sheets were delivered to the customer.

The primary objective of this agency-wide systems upgrade was to deliver a modernized system that would provide a high level of redundancy and TCP-IP communications for future projects such as the integration of IP video surveillance, biometrics and facial recognition. The new SAFEnet software platform also allows the agency to get a head start on the implementation of HSPD-12 and FIPS-201 Government identity (smart card) mandates for the agency.

MonDyn currently administers a warranty and maintenance agreement with the BEP to maintain the SAFEnet Unified Technology Platform. The US BEP has recently started integration of an enterprise-wide IP Video Surveillance system, which will be unified into the SAFEnet platform forglobal command and control capabilities of access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance management. The terms of the agreement require MonDyn to provide support services on a time and materials basis.
